Learning language through play and interaction

Children learn language most effectively when they are engaged in meaningful interaction. At Sunshine, children learn English naturally through play, daily routines, and everyday social situations with other children and adults.

Children expand their vocabulary and understanding when words are used in real-life situations – for example during meals, playtime, or shared activities. They also develop pronunciation and a natural feel for the language through listening, imitation, and repetition.

English throughout the day

At Sunshine, children learn English through:

  • Play and interaction with others

  • Daily routines such as meals and dressing

  • Singing and listening to stories

  • Talking during meals and routines

  • Exploring and making discoveries

  • Expressing ideas, feelings and needs.

Supporting both English and Finnish

While our main language of instruction is English, we also offer Finnish language activities in our early learning centres.

This supports:

Native Finnish-speaking children in developing their mother tongue.

Non-native children in learning Finnish as a second language

Our staff are also happy to communicate with parents in Finnish when needed. Please let us know your preferred language of communication.

Every child learns at their own pace

No previous English is required. Each child is given time to listen, practise and build confidence, with individual support planned together with the family.

Natural and engaging way to learn language

At Sunshine Early Learning Centre, language learning is not separated from daily life – it is part of everything we do. Through play-based learning, interaction, and supportive teaching, children develop strong communication skills and confidence in both English and their native language.

Supporting your child’s first language

As children learn English at daycare, we encourage families to support the development of the child’s mother tongue at home.

Reading books together, having conversations, and discussing everyday experiences are simple and effective ways to support your child’s language skills. A strong foundation in the first language also helps children express their thoughts and emotions and supports overall learning.
